Rodney King, whose 1991 police beating earned him national fame as a symbol for racial healing, pleaded not guilty to a DUI arrest.
The 46-year-old entered his plea in Riverside Superior Court on Monday. His next hearing was scheduled for Nov. 21.
King was pulled over July 12 and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (booking photo, below). He's accused of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, the Associated Press reported.
He faces up to a year in jail due to a prior DUI conviction, the AP reported.
His long battle with drugs and alcohol was publicly featured on the reality show "Celebrity Rehab."
In 1991, home video captured King's prolonged beating after leading officers on a high-speed pursuit through Los Angeles. Many viewed the incident as racially motivated, and after the four white officers involved in the beating were acquitted, six days of rioting began in South Central.
Fifty-five people were killed. Damage estimates reached $1 billion.
