#Slowjam ‘Bringing Down the Sixth Street Bridge'

Backed by smooth sax and soulful riffs, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti got his groove on in a public service announcement advising LA motorists "who are always on the move" of the weekend #Slowjam slowdown on the 101 Freeway.

Under a setting sun in the shadow of the soon-to-be demolished Sixth Street Bridge, Garcetti hammed it up but gave the bridge a fitting tribute in an informative traffic advisory.

"See, we're bringing down the Sixth Street Bridge, making way for something new," Garcetti riffs in the #101Slowjam, which had nearly 900,000 views by Friday evening. "The demolition will cause delays. But sometimes, just sometimes you have to get your hands dirty to build something beautiful."

The 2.5-mile stretch of freeway downtown will be closed for 40 hours beginning Friday at 10 p.m., but, the Mayor emphasized, it'll reopen just in time for the Super Bowl Sunday Kickoff.

Garcetti's backing band — 11 students from Roosevelt High School in nearby Boyle Heights.

Mayor Garcetti's office called the band room with a favor.

"He's definitely cool," said Carlos Marroquin, the band's sax player. "He's got some lines. He's smooth."

Emily Morales supported Garcetti with her graceful voice.

"I actually had to come up with everything on the spot," she said. "Whatever the mayor would say, I'd feed off that."

Since the band's online debut, band members say they've been showered with support.

Morales said she dreams of majoring in music and becoming a singer.

"My mom and dad are proud," she said.

#101SlowJam

The 101 will close for 40 hours this weekend, so we're getting ready to take it slow. We teamed up with our friends at Roosevelt High School to drop a slow jam and get the word out. Posted by Mayor Eric Garcetti on Thursday, February 4, 2016
