A multiple-hour standoff between the Newport Beach SWAT team and a suspect ended Wednesday evening, according to officials.

U.S. Marshals attempted to serve Geoffrey Earl Patton with an arrest warrant around 1:00 Wednesday afternoon. At that time, the suspect barricaded himself in a residence in the 100 block of 25th Street in Newport Beach, said Deputy Laura Vega with the U.S. Marshal.

The Newport Beach SWAT team was called in to assist, and were involved in a standoff with the suspect for about five hours.

Newport Beach police entered the home around 6:00 p.m. and took Patton into custody without incident, said Kathy Lowe, spokeswoman for Newport Beach Police. He was then handed over to  U.S. Marshals on the scene.

Patton had an arrest warrant for third degree felony larceny nearly 3,000 miles away in Westchester County, New York, Vega said. It was unclear whether he would be sent back to New York.

U.S. Marshals tipped off Newport Beach police about Patton’s location., Vega said.

Authorities were treating the suspect as armed and dangerous because of records which showed he had weapons registered in his name, Vega said.

But when the SWAT team entered the home, Patton did not have weapons on his person, Lowe said. No one else was in the home at the time of the arrest.
