Salty Sweet: Bacon Cannoli Is Happening

Slater's 50/50 adds a salty, meaty dimension to dessert.

Cannoli has enjoyed a centuries-old culinary run as a beloved Italian dessert known for mouth-meltingness and high creamy-o-sity.

And while the cream-and-dough icon may never reach the pop cultural zenith it hit in "The Godfather," a film that contains the immortal line "leave the gun, take the cannolis," the sweet is about to get a salty twist. Slater's 50/50 has created a cannoli shell that's made out of rolled bacon strips, strips that are cooked to a crispness that better allows them to hold the dessert's quintessential frosting-like fillings.

We know. You're about to rattle off all of the milkshakes and cookies and puddings that bacon is now regularly making cameos within, but consider that the morning foodstuff rarely serves as the holder or container in the dessert space.

Can bacon ice cream cones be far behind? Bacon pie crusts? In fact, are they already among us? We feel their presence out in the world, much like Richard Dreyfuss knew that aliens were here in "Close Encounters in the Third Kind." (It's really the only apt comparison.)

The Bacon Cannoli Neapolitan is Slater 50/50's February Dessert of the Month. The "Neapolitan" part should clue you into what's happening inside the bacon shell: Three flavors of creamy goodness, chocolate, vanilla, and peanut butter.

Picture those fillings paired with a salty strip tang and picture yourself ordering the plate for just yourself. Now picture all the other "shell"-type foods that could be filled by bacon, easily.

Just when bacon's reign is called over by bacon-weary blogs across the internet, its strip-savory celebrity re-emerges, phoenix-like. The bacon cannoli's moment is nigh at the boutique burger chain, so, yes indeed: Taking the cannoli is probably the wisest move.
