Pipeline Repairs Will Require Water Use Cutbacks This Week

Residents of Claremont and La Verne plus a handful of San Bernardino County communities are being asked Monday to dramatically curb their water use this week due to the closure of a pipeline for repair work.

The state Department of Water Resources will be repairing a portion of the Rialto Pipeline, affecting operations of the Three Valleys Municipal Water District, Inland Empire Utilities agency and other small agencies.

The shutdown will affect residents in La Verne and Claremont in Los Angeles County and the San Bernardino communities of Fontana, Montclair, Upland, Chino Hills, Chino, Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga -- where agencies will have to rely solely on local water supplies instead of regional deliveries.

Residents in those areas are being asked to eliminate all outdoor watering and take measures such as:

  • Limiting showers to five minutes
  • Avoid leaving water running while washing dishes, brushing teeth or shaving
  • Run only full loads in washing machines and dishwashers
  • Avoid lawn-mowing to reduce stress on turf
  • Put a bucket in the shower to collect water while it is warming up, and use the collected water for plants

The pipeline repair work is scheduled to last until Saturday.
