San Bernardino Police Officer Killed in Crash Honored at Public Memorial Service

Fellow officers and officials shared heartfelt sympathies and gratitude, describing him as a "great partner" and a "brave" person.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered Thursday in honor of San Bernardino Police Officer Bryce Hanes who was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver last week.

The public service was held with full police honors at the National Orange Show, 689 South E Street in San Bernardino.

Fellow officers and officials shared heartfelt sympathies and gratitude for the 40-year-old officer, describing him as a "great partner" and a "brave" person.

"[Hanes] dedicated and committed his time, his effort, his talents to serving our community," said San Bernardino Mayor R. Carey Davis at the service. "We will be forever grateful for the example that he set for us. We will be forever grateful to his family for their support of officer Hanes."

State Attorney General Kamala Harris also extended her gratitude to Hanes's wife and kids. "Your dad is a hero," Harris said. "He risked and ultimately gave his life to keep us all safe."

Police conducted a procession following the San Bernardino service. A graveside service was also held at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands.

A private funeral service was held for family and friends Thursday morning.

Hanes, a 12-year veteran of the San Bernardino Police Department, who spent his entire career with the department's patrol division, was remembered by the chief of police as an "exemplary officer."

Loved ones described Hanes as a devoted Mormon who didn't, drink, smoke or curse.

On Nov. 4, a Dodge Charger blew through a red light in Ontario and smashed into the passenger side of Hane's patrol car, which spun out of control and hit a traffic signal, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

The Charger went off road, over a dirt embankment, and wound up in a field, police said.

Hanes was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

The driver of the Charger, Archie Green III of Fontana, was arrested and has been charged with one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and one count of driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol content causing injury.

Green pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony charges.

Hanes leaves behind a wife and three children.
