A police officer might have been the target of a gunman who opened fire Tuesday night at a San Bernardino intersection.
The shots were reported at about 10:30 p.m. near Baseline Street and Crestview Avenue, where the officer was speaking with a witness after a report of gunshots in the area. The shots were fired from a nearby housing complex, according to a police statement.
No injuries were reported. Officers searched the area but no arrests were reported Wednesday morning.

"The officer immediately returned gunfire at the suspect who fled the area on foot," according to the police statement. "It is unknown if the suspect was struck by the officer's gunfire."

Police and residents in the community about 60 miles east of Los Angeles have faced increased violence over the past months. Last week, four homicides were reported in the city, bringing its total to 30 people killed so far this year.
At this time last year that number was 27; in 2012, it was 25.
