SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. -- A protective levee is going up along a section of San Juan Creek, and San Juan Capistrano city officials asked motorists Tuesday to be careful when driving along Del Obispo Street between Blue Fin Drive and Alipaz Street.

The work, expected to last about nine months, is being done north of Stonehill Drive Bridge, and the bike trail will be closed in the area as well.

"Although it will be inconvenient, the levee project is an important step in preventing future degradation of the concrete walls within the San Juan Creek Channel," city spokeswoman Irene Marcote said.

The Orange County Flood Control District is building the levee north of Stonehill Drive Bridge to restore an area damaged by torrents during a rainstorm a few years ago.
