Gunman Fatally Shoots Man on Santa Ana Sidewalk

A 22-year-old man who was shot four times in Santa Ana after exchanging words with people in a car that pulled alongside him later died in a hospital, police said Friday.

The victim was identified as Alonso Ortiz of Santa Ana, police said.

The shooting was reported around 10 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of South Shelley Street, according to Santa Ana Police Cmdr. Matt Brown.

Responding officers found the man suffered four gunshot wounds to his upper body, Brown said. The man now identified as Ortiz was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene told police the man was walking on the sidewalk when a black car pulled up next to him and he talked with the people inside.

One of the car's occupants got out and fired a handgun at the man before getting back in the car, which fled south on Shelley Street, Brown said.

A description of the shooter was not available.

The shooting was believed gang-related, police said.
