Search for Gunmen Cordons Off Pasadena Neighborhood For Hours

After being barred for hours from entering their neighborhood while authorities searched for two gunmen wanted in connection with a police shootout, residents in Pasadena were allowed to go back home late Thursday.

Two arrests were made "unrelated to the shooting," according to a watch commander for the Pasadena Police Department.

The manhunt brought out SWAT teams and K-9 units to the neighborhood, police said. It began about noon and ended about 9 p.m.

Authorities said even though the search is over, minimal police activity will continue in the neighborhood as officers break down a command post set up on the Wilson Street overpass above the 210 Freeway.

Undercover deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department approached two men in a car shortly after noon, according to Cmdr. Chris Russ with the Pasadena Police Department.

At least one of the men opened fire on the deputies and both ran into the neighborhood, prompting its shutdown. Russ said he could not say where the shooting occurred because the investigation is ongoing.

No officers or deputies were hurt in the exchange, officials said.

The police perimeter included the area south of Orange Grove Boulevard between Wilson and Hill avenues (map). Maple Street between Wilson and Hill avenues made up the south side of the perimeter.

Residents who were temporarily displaced were told to wait at Jefferson Elementary School located at 1500 East Villa St., or Jackie Robinson Center at 1020 North Fair Oaks Ave. There, they were briefed by law enforcement officials about what was happening in the neighborhood.
