An on-duty security guard was shot and killed outside a Rancho Cucamonga mini-mart, and family members said the man was nearing his long-awaited retirement. Jane Yamamoto reports for the NBC4 News at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014.

West Coast Metro Patrol security guard Dean Sena, 45, drove up to the scene and tried to stop the alleged robbery but was shot several times.

Sena, who was armed with a gun, was never able to pull out the weapon, authorities said. Dominguez allegedly fled on foot after the shooting.

Sena died of gunshot wounds at San Antonio Community Hospital. He was preparing for retirement, his family members said.

A witness who lives near the scene said he heard the incident as it happened.

"I was in my apartment when I heard all these gunshots, I didn't know what was going on," he said.
