13 Cars Damaged in Torrance Carport Fire

Residents of a Torrance apartment complex woke up to "complete chaos" Thursday morning after a fire erupted in a carport, damaging at least 13 cars.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 a.m. in the 1660 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Torrance Fire Department.

Residents were evacuated as flames reached about 40 feet into the air, firefighters said.

"I woke up to some shaking and some loud pops and bangs," said Mike Luther, who captured cell phone video of the blaze.

"I came out and I saw that portion was burning like crazy," said resident Satish Singhal.

Samna Mir lost her 2003 Acura in the fire that scorched 13 vehicles, some completely destroyed.

"My baby's car seat, toys and stroller. Everything," she said.

Crews attacked the two-alarm fire aggressively to keep flames from spreading to the apartment building and surrounding homes.

At least nine carports were involved in the fire that took about 30 minutes to knock down.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
