A registered sex offender was caught in the act of assaulting a woman on a bus bench near the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade early Wednesday, police said.

Officers were in the 400 block of Santa Monica Boulevard (map) around 4:30 a.m. when they said they spotted the woman in distress. The victim told police that she was waiting for the bus when the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Kelechi Amadi, touched her breasts and told her he was going to rape her.

Amadi, who was on parole for sexual battery, was arrested and expected to face one count of sexual assault with intent to commit a felony.

The Santa Monica Police Department said there may be other victims and is asking for the public’s help finding any. Police said Amadi may have targeted women in alleys at night.

Police said Amadi is homeless, wears an ankle bracelet and is known to travel extensively throughout the Los Angeles area.
