A 21-year-old Compton man was jailed Monday on suspicion of throwing a black and white Shih Tzu puppy down a storm drain during a fight with his girlfriend, police said.

Witnesses saw the man throwing a Shih Tzu puppy into a storm drain about 4:30 p.m. near Old River School Road and Firestone Boulevard, said Lt. Ron Olson of the Downey Police Department.

The hapless beast was identified as three-month-old "Chiquito".

The animal, one of the most popular of the toy breeds, was rescued unharmed by animal control authorities, Olson said.

The man's name was not immediately released. He will face felony animalcruelty charges, Olson said.
