Woman Fatally Shot in Car With Daughters in Back Seat

The driver, the father of the two girls, was hospitalized in the shooting

The mother of two young children was shot and killed and her husband was wounded when shots were fired from another car as the family drove through South Los Angles early Monday morning, police said.

The shooting occurred just after midnight in the 8300 block of South Central Avenue, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Thomas Bojorquez, watch commander at the 77th Street Station. The driver of the black Lexus sedan pulled into a 7-Eleven parking lot, which was blocked off by yellow crime scene tape Monday morning.

The mother in her 20s was in the front passenger seat and the father was driving with the two girls, about ages 3 and 5, in car seats in the back of the car. The mother died at the scene and the father was wounded but was expected to survive. He was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The mother's name was being withheld pending family notification.

"I'm grateful that they weren't struck, but it's terrible that now those two kids are going to grow up without their mother," said LAPD detective Eric Crosson. "And, a father that has to deal with raising his kids without the mother in their life."

The children have been turned over to family members.

The 5-year-old child suffered cuts from broken glass but the 3-year-old was unhurt, Bojorquez said. The car had several bullet holes in the driver's side doors and windows.

A detailed description of the shooter and car were not immediately available.

Anyone with information on this homicide was asked to call the LAPD's 77th Street Division at 213-485-4164. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS. All tips can be made anonymously.
