Man With “Very Large Butcher Knife” Shot by Police in Panorama City

Police responded to the Panorama City residence after a 911 medical emergency call regarding a man with a knife who was threatening to harm himself and others

A man armed with what police described as a "very large butcher knife" was hospitalized after officers responding to a backup request from medical personnel opened fire.

The shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. at the 13200 block of Reedley Street, Los Angeles Police Department said. The call started as medical rescue call to fire department Los Angeles Fire Department, who called LAPD for backup.

When officers arrived and entered the home. the man was in a room near the front doorway of the home.

"Upon their arrival, they were informed that the individual was barricaded in one of the rooms, possibly a bathroom inside the location, with a large kitchen knife," said Lt. Andy Neiman of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting then occurred almost immediately, and the man was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center. As of 4:20 a.m. the man was in surgery in stable condition.

No officers were injured.

Officers recovered a "very large butcher knife" at the location, Neiman said. The subject appeared to have self-inflicted cuts on his body, police said.

The initial investigation indicated there might have been other people in the home from which the 911 call was placed, Neiman said. Details regarding their relationship to the man were not available Friday morning.

No other injuries were reported.

"The was information that he was threatening himself or others with this knife," Neiman said.
