Warning Issued for Poisonous Blue-Green Algae at Silverwood Lake

Exposure to toxic blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can cause eye irritation, allergic skin rash, mouth ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea, and cold- and flu-like symptoms

The Department of Water Resources issued a no-contact warning for the entire Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County until further notice. The lake has a presence of blue-green algae toxins.

Exposure to toxic blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can cause eye irritation, allergic skin rash, mouth ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea, and cold- and flu-like symptoms, according to an organizational statement.

DWR urged citizens to avoid the following activities during the danger advisory: eating fish from the lake, swimming, participating in water sporting activities and putting pets in contact with the water.

Boating on the lake is permitted, but caution is advised.

Blue-green algae blooms change rapidly with wind and wave conditions. The algae can bloom into mats, scum and foam at the surface and along the shoreline. Colors of the algae vary from blue, white, green and brown.

DWR suggests seeking medical treatment immediately if you think that you, a family member, friend, pet, or livestock might have been poisoned by blue-green algae toxins. Be sure to alert medical professionals to the possible contact with blue-green algae.
