Six Sheriff's Deputies Hurt, Including One Who Was Bitten in House Fire

A man was taken into custody Thursday at the scene of a house fire in Paramount, where one sheriff's deputy was bitten and five others suffered smoke inhalation.

The fire was reported at 3:18 p.m. in the 6500 block of San Luis Street in Paramount, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The blaze was knocked down at 3:47 p.m., a fire department inspector said.

Cell phone video from a neighbor captured the confrontation among sheriff's deputies and the man. Deputies tried to pull the man from the smoking house when the man hoisted what appears to be a walker at the deputies. The struggle moved to the front lawn of the house. At one point, deputies shocked the man with a stun gun.

The bitten deputy and the five who suffered smoke inhalation while trying to make sure no one was in the home and that the man got out safely were all taken to a hospital, as was the man, according to the sheriff's department.

The fire may have been started by fireworks that were in the man's possession, county fire officials said.

It's unclear what possible charges the man faces or if he is alleged to have bitten the deputy.
