Crowd Gathers on Sixth Street Bridge Ahead of Closure

Hundreds of people gathered on the iconic Sixth Street Bridge Tuesday night, prompting police to move in to try and disperse the crowd.

The bridge is slated for demolition during the first week of February because of a structural flaw, and is scheduled to close Wednesday.

"My family has shot a lot of stuff on this bridge and I felt I should be a part of this scene tonight," Darby Walker, a Silver Lake resident, said.

Social media was credited with getting the word out on the massice turnout.

One woman was taken into custody in an interaction with police caught on camera. The LAPD later confirmed she was arrested.

"I came all the way from Modesto," Jonathan Gutierrez said.

Officers formed a skirmish line, and the crowds were cleared by 11 p.m.

The new bridge is a $449 million project and should debut in 2019.
