No Injuries After Biplane Crashes in San Bernardino County Field

Two people aboard a biplane walked away without injuries after their aircraft experienced engine failure and landed upside down on a San Bernardino County field on Friday, officials said.

The single-engine Antonov AN-2 landed near 9th Street and Lankershim Avenue in Highland, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department and FAA officials. The bright yellow plane, nicknamed "Big Panda" according to aviation records, has appeared in Southern California air shows.

Officials said the plane was approaching the San Bernardino International Airport when it experienced engine failure.

The pilot and passenger aboard managed to get themselves out of the plane after the crash, Capt. Fagar Fowler with the San Bernardino County Fire Department said.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities were asking the public to avoid the area as the plane had downed power lines and several streets were closed to traffic.
