Son Pushes Mother Out of Window to Her Death

A man was arrested Monday after allegedly pushing his mother out of a second-story window during an argument at an Van Nuys apartment building and continuing to attack her on the ground, resulting in her death, police said.

Carlota Vargas, 71, was fatally injured about 3 a.m. in the 7400 block of Hazeltine Avenue and died at a hospital.

Fernando Vargas, 40, was treated for a heel fracture and was to be booked on suspicion of murder, police said. The pair reportedly had lived in their apartment for about 10 years.

According to the preliminary investigation, the two had been arguing before he allegedly pushed her from the window. He then jumped from the window and attacked his mother on the ground, Los Angeles police Officer Norma Eisenman alleged.

Detectives are still investigating a motive and they have not ruled out the use of drugs.
