Man Wanted for Carjacking in Custody After Standoff at South Gate Home

Evacuations were ordered during the standoff in the 10600 block of Capistrano Avenue

An armed man suspected in a carjacking was taken into custody after holding police at bay in a four-hour standoff in South Gate on Monday, officials said.

The 23-year-old man, who police say is a felon and known gang member, was wanted for carjacking a woman and her children on Long Beach Boulevard.

Officers tracked the car to a home in the 10600 block of Capistrano Avenue. The man refused to come out and fired rounds from the house, police said.

The man was taken into custody by SWAT officers about 3:30 p.m. His name was not immediately released.

Some residents were evacuated due to the police activity, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Other residents were told to shelter in place.

Officers at the scene said residents would be allowed to return to their homes by 4 p.m.

Some neighbors said the man lived in a home that police had raided a couple of months ago.

"They didn't look like the friendly family moving in," neighbor Gilberto Contreras said.
