Motorcycle Officer Fatally Shoots Man in South LA

A motorcycle officer shot and fatally wounded a suspect Tuesday during a traffic stop in South Los Angeles.

The officer was not injured in the shooting, which occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Century Boulevard east of Figueroa Street, according to Detective Meghan Aguilar of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The motor officer had stopped a dark sedan, from which a passenger emerged, according to Aguilar.

That person was then shot by the officer, she said.

Aguilar confirmed that the suspect was fatally wounded and the county coroner's office reported that he died en route to a hospital.

He was identified as 18-year-old Kenney Watkins, according the to LAPD.

The driver of the sedan, whose gender and approximate age have not been disclosed, drove off and remains at large. Two handguns were recovered at the scene, Aguilar said.

He did not fire, and it wasn't clear whether he showed a gun or even had a gun, according to the LAPD.

It wasn't immediately clear if anyone else was in the car.

A detailed description of the vehicle was not available.

Police activity in the area prompted the California Highway Patrol to shut down the Century Boulevard off-ramp from the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway.

A stretch of Century Boulevard was also blocked off as police investigated the shooting.
