Pursuit Driver Sends Shoppers Scattering in Target Parking Lot

Shoppers sprinted for cover to avoid a driver when he tried to elude officers during a pursuit that wound through a Target parking lot Tuesday morning in southern Los Angeles County.

The pursuit began in the Buena Park area after a report of a stolen vehicle. Police tried to stop the driver near Western and Orangethorpe avenues, but the driver eluded officers.

Tense moments followed in a Target parking lot, where customers near the front entrance scattered to avoid the red Honda sedan. Officers attempted to block the car in the parking lot, but the driver swerved around patrol cars.

No injuries were reported.

The pursuit continued into a residential area before entering the 5 Freeway, where aerial video showed the driver swerving across lanes to avoid heavy morning traffic in the Norwalk area. The driver ran several stop signs and traffic lights, squeezed between cars stopped at an intersection, then drove on the wrong side of the road for several blocks on Telegraph Road.

The pursuit ended in the Santa Fe Springs area when an officer used a PIT maneuver to spin the red Honda. The man behind the wheel and a female passenger surrendered after a brief standoff with officers.
