Standoff Leads to Evacuations in Downey

A barricade situation in Downey prompted evacuations early Tuesday at an apartment building.

The standoff started at 9 p.m. Monday after police answered an assault call in the 9400 block of Elm Vista Drive, said Downey police officials. They said a man threatened two people with a gun.

The suspect is a man in his 20s who is believed to be armed with an assault weapon, police said.  When he refused to surrender, authorities called in a sheriff’s SWAT team.

The man was taken into custody at about 6:30 a.m.

Between 40 and 50 residents were evacuated from the apartment building as SWAT officials attempted to talk the suspect into giving up, authorities said.

No injuries were reported.
