Gunfire From Suspected Car Thief Injures Deputy by Shattering Cruiser Glass

A Riverside County Sheriff's deputy was injured during a pursuit of a suspected car thief who shot at the officers Saturday night, authorities said.

Gunshots from a high-powered assault rifle immobilized the deputy's patrol car.  The deputy wasn't hit by gunfire, but glass from a shattered window cut the deputy's hand, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

The pursuit began in San Jacinto at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Deputies saw a wanted car at De Anza Drive and Palm Avenue and initiated the pursuit, during which someone in the car shot at the deputy.

The suspect crashed into a house two blocks from the scene of the shooting, on Savory Road, but fled on foot and escaped deputies, according to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

"A weapon similar to the one used in the assault was found in the rear yard of a residence near the collision of the suspect's vehicle," the statement said.

The suspect, in his 20s, was still outstanding Sunday afternoon, deputies said.
