What to Know

  • Saturday, March 23
  • Noon to 5 p.m.
  • Free

Our calendars are crowded with major occasions, from tradition-packed holidays to birthdays to the kind of moments are newly meaningful to us, like recent anniversaries.

It's unfortunate, in a way, that every Saturday of the year isn't a special occasion, specifically those Saturdays that start warmer, fresher, get-outside seasons.

Take the first Saturday of spring, which, in 2019, is March 23. You'll likely want something interesting to do, that maybe doesn't cost a thing, an outing that can broaden your mind, tickle your fancies, and maybe send you home with a not-too-pricey artwork of your own.

That, in a nice nutshell, is the Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk.

The popular event is headed into its lucky 13th year, it is still as free as a spring breeze, and it is packed opportunities to look around, to gaze at especially fetching or intriguing pieces, to chat up artists, and to shop for art made by the students of the Santa Monica College Ceramic Arts program.

The sounds of the day? Listen for "old-school tropical music," spun by Subsuelo, as well as a performance by the all-female mariachi group Las Colibrí.

The hours of this sunbeamful day o' art? Noon to 5 o'clock, oh yeah. Food trucks, things for kids to participate in, and other spring-Saturday-ish high jinks and gotta-dos will be afoot.

And, for sure: This is all at the Santa Monica Airport, adding another interesting layer to the already layer-filled lark.

So, how will you pay happy honor to the first Saturday of springtime?

It's an auspicious day, and folding in some art fun, all without spending money, feels like it lives up to the spirit of the unofficial, but very real, holiday.
