Students Rally Around Teacher Critically Injured in Santa Ana Hit-and-Run

Students gathered Wednesday to support a high school band teacher who was nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver in Santa Ana.

Christopher Chavez, a drum line instructor at Saddleback High School, was in critical condition after he was struck by a car while walking near the intersection of Bristol Street and Central Avenue.

A family member told NBC4 that Chavez sustained two broken legs, a broken arm, a broken shoulder, and blood in his brain.

Members of the high school band showed up at the hospital where Chavez was being treated.

"I'm just completely shocked. What kind of person would do such a thing to such a kind man like him," said Fabian Alonso, a student at Saddleback High School.

Chavez' aunt Patricia Martinez urged the hit-and-run driver to find authorities.

"Just turn yourself in. This has got to be eating at your conscience as to what you did to this man," Martinez said.

A detective was expected to be assigned to the case next week.
