Armed Man at Large After Hourslong Bellflower Barricade

After an hourslong standoff between a SWAT team and an armed man who was holed up in a Bellflower home ended Friday morning, sheriffs said the man has not been found.

Lakewood station deputies responded to a family disturbance call at 10:47 p.m. Thursday at a residence in the 15700 block of Cornuta Avenue, where an armed man had threatened to shoot his father, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB).

Although the father was able to leave the home, the man's "bedridden grandmother" and her caretaker remained inside the home with the man and could not leave, sheriffs said in a statement. After making attempts to get the man to surrender, the SEB Special Weapons Team entered the home and rescued the grandmother and her caretaker.

The standoff lasted for almost six hours. When SEB could not successfully contact anyone else in the home and "determined there were no other hostages," the team went in to search for the man, sheriffs noted in a statement. He was not found inside.

The surrounding homes were evacuated for the safety of the residents, sheriff's deputies said. Later Friday morning, evacuees were allowed to return to their homes.

A SWAT officer told NBC4 that local authorities would determine whether or not to continue the search.

Anyone with information about the incident or the man's whereabouts was asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lakewood Station at 562-623-3500.
