Surveillance Images Show Truck Suspected in Hit-Run That Killed Woman in San Bernardino

Police on Thursday released surveillance images of a pickup truck suspected in a hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 63-year-old woman in San Bernardino.

The crash took place in the morning of Oct. 2. Darlena Santiago was walking across Waterman Avenue at the intersection of Norman Road (map) when the driver of the gray Toyota truck hit her, the San Bernardino Police Department said. She died days later.

"She was nice. Sometimes she had an attitude, but most of the time she was a good person, very loving," said Santiago's husband, John Torres.

Torres recalls the last time he saw his wife.

"She was just going to the store, Shell gas station, to get some cigarettes and something to drink," he said.

Investigators released surveillance videos taken from several cameras located around the city showing the older model Toyota driving away from the scene. At one point a ladder in the bed of the truck falls off, along with other items.

"We would just like to know where it fell out and actually what it was," San Bernardino Police Lt. Richard Lawhead said. "That may help us also in locating a suspect."

Investigators say the driver may live in the area and may have been heading to work that morning. They're hoping someone will recognize the truck and its distinct features.

"On both sides of the vehicle, it does have some primer on the bed," Lawhead said. "

The truck also had a tinted window, and it appears that there's a chrome strip or some kind of modification done to the rear window.

Police and family members hope releasing the images will help lead to an arrest.

"We just want him to turn himself in," said Santiago's brother, Lorezon Navarette. "My sister could rest in peace."
