Suspect Arrested in Hit-And-Run Crash with Wheelchair-Bound Man

A citizen's tip led to the arrest of a man on Sunday in connection with a hit-and-run accident that critically injured a man in a wheelchair in Santa Ana, officials said.

At about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, someone reported that a vehicle parked in a residential area matched the description of the hit-and-run vehicle, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

A further investigation led to the arrest of Santa Ana resident Lucio Luna, 48, who was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run, and DUI, authorities said.

The man in the wheelchair was crossing First Street going south at 10:35 p.m. Friday, within a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by a vehicle -- a black or dark-colored Toyota Camry -- that was headed east. Police said the car sustained extensive damage to its front end.

Officers dispatched at 10:37 p.m. Friday to the crash scene near the intersection of First and Townsend streets reported that the pedestrian was down in the roadway. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital in extremely critical condition.

Santa Ana police asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at 714-245-8284.
