Police in Lennox arrested a man who ran from the scene after an deputy-involved shooting Saturday morning, according to police.

Deputies with the South Los Angeles station approached the man in the 10000 block of Dalerose Avenue after they recognized him as a known gang member. The suspect, who police said had a gun in his hand, dropped the weapon and ran from the officers.

The man scaled a nearby fence and, on the other side, reached into his jacket, according to police.

One of the deputies, fearing the suspect was reaching for another weapon, fired one round, missing the suspect, who continued to flee west on Dalerose Avenue toward Inglewood Avenue.

After combing the scene, investigators found a gun they believe belonged to the suspect, officials said.

Police found the man in the backyard of a home in the 4800 block of Lennox Boulevard, police said. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

The suspect was described as a Latino male with several tattoos on his face. He is thought to be between 18 and 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds.

Officer-involved shootings have occurred nearly every weekend in January.

Four people were killed by police during the first weekend of the new year, and another three were killed two weeks later by officers in separate incidents.

All of the victims were men who had or were suspected of having weapons.
