A reckless driver believed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol died after an officer opened fire following a brief pursuit, prompting officials to close Sepulveda Boulevard between Hickory Avenue and Maple Avenue.
The Torrance Police Department responded to a call just after 2 a.m. and began a pursuit after the driver of a green Ford Ranger refused to yield. Officers used a PIT maneuver to halt the driver then opened fire when the maneuver failed to make them stop.
Authorities performed life-saving measures on the driver until they were able to be transported to a local hospital, where they died.
Details on what led up to the shooting were not immediately clear and the driver has not been identified.
