A bomb squad and police units cordoned off a portion of the Venice bike path Tuesday night after someone reported a bomb in the area, police said.

A transient found what appeared to be a pipe bomb buried in the sand, according to LAPD. He flagged down an officer, who call in reinforcements.

The incident was reported around 9:15 p.m. on Ocean Front Walk between Sunset Boulevard and Brooks Avenue. That portion of the area was shut down pending the investigation.
