Murder Suspects Plead Not Guilty in Toddler Shooting Death

The victim's mother had taken his older siblings to Knott's Berry Farm for the day, but left him at his grandmother's house

Two men suspected of killing a 4-year-old boy who was struck by gunfire last week in front of his grandmother's home were charged Monday with murder and attempted murder.

Darron Daniels, 20, of Moreno Valley, and Maurice Kelley, 25, of San Bernardino plead not guilty to murder charges in San Bernardino. Both were charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder in connection with last week's shooting in Highland.

Bail has been set at $2 million for both men.

The two men were suspected of killing Daniel Munoz who was shot in the neck as he played with his stuffed animal in his grandmother's front yard on July 30.

The victim's mother had taken his older siblings to Knott's Berry Farm for the day, but left him at his grandmother's house because there wasn't enough room in the car. She promised to bring him next time.

Deputies confirmed Munoz was with his aunt and cousins in the front yard when he was fatally wounded. The aunt, who was next to Munoz during the shooting, carried him to a nearby house for help.

It was unclear whether the shooting was gang related.

Police searched for the suspected shooters who were found and arrested the next day.

Outside the courthouse Monday, Daniels' family members did not wish to speak about the accusations against Daniels.

District Attorney Michael Ramos released a statement saying, "The cowards who committed this senseless crime will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law and justice will be served for Daniel and his family."

Community members came together Sunday to raise money for the boy's funeral. It was not known when the funeral will be held.
