Suspicious Package That Closed 101 Freeway Was DJ Equipment: Officials

Suspicious wires and a case found inside a wrecked vehicle that prompted a shut down the 101 Freeway near Universal City for several hours Tuesday night ended up being DJ equipment, officials said Thursday.

Authorities responding to a two-vehicle crash on the southbound side of the freeway near Barham Boulevard contacted a driver who “appeared nervous and continued looking toward the back seat of his vehicle,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

After noticing driver Serkan Runcay’s behavior, the officer found wires, lights and a suspicious case in the back seat of the car and believed he was transporting an “explosive device,” officials said. Runcay was hospitalized as the freeway was shut down and authorities investigated the items.

Bomb squad units concluded their investigation more than two hours later and determined the items were actually DJ equipment.

Officials said Truncay was not under the influence of the crash but had suffered a “mental episode."
