Tar Balls Spotted on SoCal Beaches From Natural Source

Black globules were spotted near both Hermosa and Malibu Surfrider beaches Thursday

Southern California beachgoers have been warned they may find tar balls in the sand over the Independence Day weekend.

Black globules were spotted near both Hermosa and Malibu Surfrider beaches Thursday, however scientists have confirmed they come from a natural source.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division has asked the public notify authorities if they find any on the sand.

"This is an annual natural occurrence that takes place as the water temperatures heat up during the spring and summer months in Los Angeles County," LACFD spokesman Ken Kondo said. "Beach goers and visitors (should) not touch or come in contact with the tar ball substance and... notify the nearest lifeguard tower."

Scientists have confirmed the tar balls found approximately one mile offshore of King Harbor, came from a natural seepage from the ocean floor.
