High School Sweethearts Killed Hacienda Heights Crash Were on a Date, Headed to Knott's Scary Farm

"He loved her so much," Riasema Silva, mother of one of the victims, said.

Family and friends held a vigil for two 18-year-old high school sweethearts who were killed in a horrific crash in Hacienda Heights Sunday.

"He loved her so much," Riasema Silva, mother of one of the victims, said.

Family and friends said that they were best friends, and always together.

George Steward II and Sabrina Castillo of Hacienda were on a date, headed to Knott’s Scary Farm when they were struck by a speeding Lexus went airborne off of the 60 Freeway near South 7th Avenue.

According to CHP, a black Lexus was approaching a stop sign at the end of the 7th Avenue off ramp from the eastbound 60 Freeway when it hit a center median and went airborne. The Lexus then collided with the Toyota Tacoma, driven by Steward.

The impact was so intense, the pickup truck's roof was ripped off, according to CHP.

"I heard the ugliest sound you could hear," Juan Castaneda, a witness, said. "Just grinding metal."

The teen couple died at the scene Sunday.

Light rain fell on family and friends who gathered to remember the couple at the vigil at the scene of the crash.

Steward was a football player at Los Altos High School who wanted to be in Coast Guard, regularly posting on social media about how proud he was to have Sabrina as his girlfriend...

Sabrina's mother Riasema Silva said George made her daughter so happy, and they had planned for a future together.

"She wanted to be a makeup artist, and her and George wanted to get married," Silva said. "I'm going to be brokenhearted for a long time."

George’s little brother asked everyone to give pause for reflection.

"When you get home or if they are with you right now, hug your brother or sister, kiss them. Tell them you love them, because you don't know when they will be gone, you don't," Silva said.

Silva’s mother, breaking down in tears, said it was simply tragic.

"But in the end they are together and that's all that mattered, that's how they wanted it," Silva said.

There was no word on whether charges would be filed Monday against the woman and man inside the Lexus, identified as Key J. Kim, 68, and his passenger, Young A. Kim, 62.

CHP said the Lexus flipped onto its roof and landed on a nearby Denny's restaurant parking lot and the Kims inside were suspended upside down before being extracted and transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

CHP is investigating why the black sedan was traveling so fast. Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor.

Investigators said a data recorder in the Lexus could be crucial to the case, and could reveal the exact speed, angle of the steering wheel, and whether the brake pedal was used.
