Teen Fatally Shoots 9-Year-Old Brother in Perris, Deputies Say

A 14-year-old boy fatally shot his 9-year-old brother in Perris, sheriff's officials say.

An "accidental shooting" was reported just after noon Saturday in the 140 block of Metz Road, Riverside County sheriff's officials said.

Deputies determined that the teen had shot his younger brother. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further information was immediately available.

Daryl Busch has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years and has been the mayor of Perris for 15. He said the family involved in the shooting recently moved to the neighborhood. After the shooting, authorities called him and explained what happened.

"The gun was in a box, covered up, it wasn't open. They found it, pulled it out, started playing with it and one shot the other," Busch said.

Other neighbors were reeling after learning about the killing.

"I have three children of my own and just to hear the news of what occurred here today, it's very, very heartbreaking," Maria Maya said.

"It shouldn't have happened in the first place, kids shouldn't even be around guns," another neighbor said.
