Teen Shot by Police in Orange County May Have Been Armed With Toy Gun

A resident told NBC4 that the weapon he saw lying on the floor following the shooting was not real

A teenager shot after allegedly pointing a weapon at officers in Garden Grove may have been armed with a plastic gun.

The 18-year-old was gunned down after brandishing a semi-automatic handgun at the lawmen at Chapman Avenue and Jacalene Lane at 4:10 p.m Monday, a Garden Grove Police Department spokesman said. They were responding after an off-duty officer reported seeing the teen walking around with a gun in his hand before tucking it into his waistband.

A resident told NBC4 that the weapon he saw lying on the floor following the shooting was not real.

"I walked out to the gate right there and I look on the ground and I see a toy gun. A toy gun with a plastic bullet," the witness said. "It couldn't hurt you any, but the shooting was real and serious."

Garden Grove police would not confirm whether the gun found at the scene was real or fake.

The teen was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center in unknown condition.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is handling the investigation.
