Teen Struck in the Neck in South Los Angeles Shooting

The bullet just missed the 16-year-old victim's spinal cord, police said

A 16-year-old girl was shot in the neck in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning.

The girl was walking down the street with a friend when a bullet hit the back of her neck, just missing her spinal cord, said Sgt. Michael Pounds of the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Division.

The girl said she did not realize she had been shot after feeling air blow past her face and then a pain in her neck, Pounds said. The girl and her friend ran to hide and then called police for help, he said.

Police still do not know what led up to the shooting or who the suspect might be, Pounds said.

The girl, who was talking to first responders at the scene, underwent surgery and is in stable condition, Pounds said.
