Teenager Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run in Front of High School

The driver of the car stopped briefly, but left the scene of the crash before emergency services arrived, according to authorities.

A 14-year-old girl was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash in front of a Riverside high school Wednesday, authorities said.

The Riverside City Police Dispatch Center received reports of the crash at La Sierra Avenue and Cochran Avenue around 7:17 a.m., according to the Riverside Police Department.

When authorities arrived, they found the teenager, "lying in the southbound lanes of La Sierra Avenue with critical injuries," Riverside Police said in a statement. She was struck next to La Sierra High School.

Based on witness statements, police believe the teen was walking across La Sierra Avenue in the crosswalk when a truck driving westbound on Cochran Avenue made a left-hand turn to southbound La Sierra Avenue, and struck her with the car, according to the Riverside Police Department.

The driver of the truck stopped briefly, but drove away from the scene of the crash before emergency services arrived, according to authorities.

The teenager was transported to Loma Linda Hospital, and was in stable condition with pelvic and internal injuries, said officer Ryan Railsback of the Riverside Police Department.

A police officer located and pulled over the driver, a 42-year-old woman of Riverside, at State Route 91 and La Sierra Avenue Wednesday, police said in a statement. The driver and car were positively identified by multiple witnesses.

The woman was detained and was being interviewed by detectives, Railsback said, adding that they were confident that the woman and the car were involved in the collision. They were not looking for any additional suspects as of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

A portion of La Sierra Avenue was closed off Wednesday while the Riverside Police Deparment's Major Accident Investigation Team investigated the collision and collected evidence, police said.
