West Hollywood Bar Hires Armed Guards in Wake of Orlando Massacre

In the wake of the Orlando nightclub massacre, one of West Hollywood's most popular gay bars is taking extra steps to protect its guests.

David Cooley, owner of The Abbey, says armed guards have been hired to protect customers and hopefully bring a sense of security after a shooting rampage at Pulse — also a gay bar — left 50 people dead and scores more injured.

The Abbey staffs armed security guards from time to time for major events, like last weekend's Pride celebration.

A man from Indiana was arrested hours after the shooting, when police found assault rifles, high capacity magazines and bomb-making chemicals in his car. He said he intended to attend LA Pride.

West Hollywood resident Ruben Ochoa says gay bars and clubs are a safe-haven for the LGBT community, and he hopes it stays that way.

"Nothing's happened like that in this community, but clearly extra security makes people feel more comfortable going somewhere," he said.

Cooley said this weekend was emotional and difficult, but he and this community will not let the horrific incident in Orlando stop them from celebrating who they are.
