The cover, which features the upcoming animated flick, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, is a magazine milestone in terms of 3-Dimensional technology.
Virtual Images, which also creates 3-D packaging for DVDs and movie posters created the one of a kind ad. The company has already been working to utilize their 3-D innovations in as many ways as possible and it seems like print ads could become the latest hot thing.
“This is an underused communications medium. It’s about cutting through the clutter, and 3-D tells more of the story — with that sweet depth,” explains Dave Corey, the President of Virtual Images.
The cover of the respected trade publication is the first of its kind, but work has already started on more 3-D pages. The Hollywood Reporter and Virtual Images have an exclusive partnership, the terms of which have not been made public.
But this monopoly on 3-D probably won’t last too long, especially considering that the technology provides publications with a lot of bang for their buck.
When working on a smaller scale, such as an 8 ½ x 11 page, turning a normal ad into a 3-D experience only costs an extra 15%, a figure that could easily be made up with increased sales.
While it's too soon to tell, this could be a welcome boost for printed publications.
