Public Can Feel Safe, LAPD Chief Says After NY Bombings

The Los Angeles police chief on Monday noted the Emmy Awards, the NFL game and other events and assured Angelenos and guests that they can feel safe.

"People attending these events can most certainly feel safe, as our LAPD officers and other city partners have taken every step to ensure a secure environment," chief Charlie Beck said.

And Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed support for East Coast residents in the wake of the explosion that injured 29 people in New York, and two other unrelated incidents this weekend. He vowed to remain vigilant in keeping local communities safe.

The first Los Angeles Rams game in 22 years kicked off today in the Los Angeles Coliseum, and just three miles away, the national Emmy broadcast was to start at 4 p.m. at the Staples Center.

"The LAPD and its law enforcement partners here in California and at the Federal level are constantly assessing there levels to ensure the safety of LA residents," Beck said in a statement issued at midday. "As of this hour, there are no known, specific, or credible threats here in Los Angeles," he said.

"Nevertheless, we ask everyone to stay vigilant and remember, 'If you see something, say something.'"

Last Saturday, Garcetti said "our thoughts are with everyone who has endured the violence in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia this weekend. "We condemn those responsible and offer our support to first responders and all those working tirelessly to tend to the injured, restore calm and investigate these senseless attacks."

A device authorities described as a makeshift explosive injured at least 29 people Saturday night on a crowded sidewalk in Manhattan's Chelsea district. A second unexploded device was also discovered. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has said an initial investigation indicates the devices were deliberately set, but do not appear to be terrorist- related.

Earlier Saturday an explosive went off in a garbage can near the boardwalk in New Jersey's Seaside Park. No injuries were reported. On Friday night, a gunman went on a shooting spree in West Philadelphia that left one woman dead and two police officers injured. Garcetti said Los Angeles police continue to monitor all three incidents and remain "dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all of L.A.'s communities."
