Thieves Ram Van Into Gun Store in Burglary Attempt

Because of the owners "extraordinary security measures" the suspects were not able to get inside.

Would-be thieves tried to use a stolen van as a battering ram to break into an ammunition store in Cerritos Monday morning, police said.

Surveillance video of the incident shows what appears to be one suspect directing the driver of a 1984 Chevrolet van towards the Ammo Bros. store at 15979 Piuma  Ave. a little after 4:00 a.m. Monday.

Seconds later, the driver repeatedly rams the van into the store's entrance.

Because of the owners "extraordinary security measures" the suspects were not able to get inside, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Police were searching for two or three male suspects who fled the scene, possibly using a gray sedan and champagne colored Ford Excursion, said deputies.

"The suspects were presumably targeting firearms and detectives are actively investigating the incident," said Lieutenant Richard Harpham. "Had this been successful and the guns end up in the hands of criminals, they would present an inherent danger to the public."

Deputies ran the van's plates and discovered it was reported stolen from Bellflower on Saturday.
