Baby Allegedly Beaten by Mom’s Boyfriend Not Expected to Survive: Family

A 13-month-old boy allegedly attacked by his mother's boyfriend in East Rancho Dominguez is not expected to survive, the child's grandfather has said.

Rodrigo Hernandez, was arrested soon after deputies were called to the 14900 block of South Atlantic Avenue at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, and he admitted to beating the boy according to LA County Sheriff’s Department investigators.

The lawmen noticed Fernando Garcia had visible injuries, and he was taken to a hospital in Long Beach for treatment. The child sustained significant internal injuries in the attack and is in extremely critical condition. His grandfather told NBC Los Angeles he is not expected to survive.

"We see the paramedics over there, and I see the lady grabbing... the baby... with both hands and the kid didn't move," a neighbor said.

Hernandez, 22, is being held on $100,000 bail on child abuse charges, which could escalate to murder if the youngster succumbs to his injuries.

He admitted to beating the boy, according to detectives, however they do not know if he struck the child with more than his hands, if there were multiple beatings, or when the attack happened. It is also unknown if his mother was present when her child was attacked.

Hernandez moved in with his girlfriend, who is the mother of Fernando and three girls, all under the age of ten, in December. It has yet to be determined if they were also victims of beatings. Their biological father is in prison, according to their grandfather.
