60 Freeway Shut Down in Jurupa Valley After 3 Killed in Crash

The 60 Freeway was shut down for several hours in Jurupa Valley early Saturday following a crash that claimed three lives.

The Riverside County Fire Department responded to a call of a collision involving four vehicles and a big rig just after 3:30 a.m. The crash occurred on the eastbound 60 Freeway near Pedley Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of a Honda Accord lost control and crashed into the center divider near Country Village Road, CHP told NBC4 Saturday morning. Its lights went out and the car became disabled.

Then a man driving eastbound in a Ford Fusion hit the Honda, ejecting three people from the disabled car. CHP said a man was ejected onto the westbound side of the freeway, where he was struck by multiple vehicles. The other occupants of the Honda were also struck.

CHP said the three people ejected were not wearing seat belts, but it was not immediately clear if they had taken them off after the initial crash.

In addition to the three fatalities, the driver of the Ford suffered minor injuries on both arms.

The identities of the people in the Honda were not immediately released.

Most lanes of the freeway remained closed Saturday morning while investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash, but the freeway was reopened by 11:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
