A mother and her two daughters remain in the hospital Wednesday after they were hit by a van in a busy Thousand Oaks intersection Tuesday.
The mother, 29-year-old Griselda Castro, managed to push a toddler in a baby stroller out of the way of an oncoming van before the moment of impact.
Witnesses said they cared for the child in the stroller -- a 2-year-old unrelated to Castro -- until authorities arrived.
Castro is now in stable condition in the intensive care unit of Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, said Sgt. Barbara Payton of the Thousand Oaks Police Department Traffic Division.
Castro's 6-year-old daughter is in critical condition with internal injuries at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, where another 4-year-old daughter is in stable condition. An unrelated 5-year-old child who was with the family has been released from the hospital, Payton said. All five were thought to have been related Tuesday.
The incident happened in the 2600 block of Thousand Oaks Boulevard (map) at Live Oak Avenue, just before 2 p.m Tuesday.
The family and the other two girls had been attempting to cross in a marked crosswalk, according to police. The intersection does not have a traffic light, and instead uses flashing yellow lights and white paint on the ground to indicate the crosswalk.

The 52-year-old driver of the van, Carlos Miguel Serrano-Nino of Downey, was interviewed at the police station but was not arrested, Payton said. It was previously reported that Serrano-Nino had been taken into custody.
The investigation is ongoing, Payton said.
