Toddler in Coma After Hit-and-Run Crash in Front of Family

The 2-year-old child was playing with his 5-year-old brother before he ran into the street to see his uncle, family members said

A 2-year-old boy remains hospitalized in a coma Thursday morning after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in front of his family's home.

At about 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jonathan Montes was playing with his 5-year-old brother in their driveway on Perris Hill Road in San Bernardino. When Montes saw their uncle standing across the street from their home, he darted into the path of a car.

"The car didn't stop at all, it just kept going. It just drove off," said the uncle, Nicholas Ortega.

Ortega said the impact sent the boy flying 100 feet down the road. The child's mother immediately performed CPR until paramedics arrived. He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Details regarding his condition were not available.

On Thursday, Angel Montes, the mother, said her son did not have any brain activity and will likely not recover.

"You never think this is going to happen to you," she said. "It changes your life. I didn't even know what to do."

The boy, who family members lovingly nicknamed junior, is the youngest of five children.

"He has the biggest personality on him, the way that he walks from the way that he talks," said the heartbroken mother. "He's such a beautiful boy. My baby, you know?"

Family members hope surveillance video CHP investigators got from a nearby church will lead to an arrest.

"I'm trying to be positive and I'm trying to be there for my little boy when he needs me the most," the mother said. "But in the back of my mind, I feel so much hatred towards this person."

The car was described as a silver sedan, possibly a Subaru or Mitsubishi. Authorities said security camera video of the crash will be analyzed.

"The surveillance video gives us hope that will point us in the right direction," said CHP Officer Brian Alvarez. "We are staying cautiously optimistic that this will assist us in locating the driver of the vehicle and the vehicle."
